Employers expect form maid agencies in Malaysia to find and recruit domestic helpers with varieties of good characteristics. However, finding a perfect domestic helper is a tough job. Maid agencies and employers need to find out the good characters of a maid.  The purpose of this article is to extend the employer’s knowledge about the attributes that a housemaid should have before recruiting and most importantly the ways they can assess these attributes.
Based on the job offer/ scope and employer’s preferences they have for a maid, physical appearance of a maid can be scrutinized like height and weight; age range and family status of the maid; single, married, with children or without. Though, assessing Personality Traits and characteristics of a maid to match with employer’s family before hiring is the most difficult part. In a short sentence, “attitude is everything”

Personality traits are distinguishing qualities or characteristics that are the embodiment of an individuals. They are the habitual patterns of behaviour, temperament and emotion. In order to give the best maid service in Malaysia, our expert team in DG- Malaysia Maid Agency based on their vast experiences tries to uncover the details of the most important personality traits that a maid should have and in the next article the methods that an employer can evaluate each of these traits will be discussed.

First and foremost, a maid must be empathetic. The primary focus of work is on the wants and needs of the employer and family. A maid with empathy enables her to understand employer’s motivations, needs, and emotions more deeply, and she can use that understanding to do better work for them. empathy is an essential quality for maid to develop. Being empathetic lets her look at things from different perspectives and internalize it.
Having empathy comes from focusing on someone else’s needs, struggles, and feelings. It requires that she opens her heart to them (employer’s family) and put their needs before her own. She needs to be open to many different types of employers from many different cultures. But you can’t connect with people when you’re feeling worried, defensive, angry, frightened, or ashamed. Empathy is about standing in someone else’s shoes, feeling with heart, seeing with eyes. If there is any good maid, she lies in the ability to get the employer’s point of view and sees things from that person’s angle, as well as from her own.

2)    Be Passionate
Being an effective maid requires great drive, enthusiasm, and focus. To sustain the level of effort and concentration that the work demands, maid must have a passion for her work. She must love the employers job offer work and she’ll have the motivation to continually improve her skills and expand her areas of competency. When the work is with passion, she can reach her full potential. Work is going to fill a large part of her life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what she believes is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.

Listening well is the key to effective communication. Focusing on both what employers say and how they say it ensures that a maid accurately receives the messages from employer communicate with her. Paying attention to their use of language, tone of voice, body language, gestures, and emotional affect increases the probability that a maid will be able to correctly interpret their meaning and understand what she hears. Listen for employer’s ideas, not just to their words. When she listens well, she’ll experience fewer misunderstandings and make fewer mistakes. “If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.”

Responsible is “Capable of being trusted.”— and kindness” is “The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.”
It’s essential that a maid do her best to meet expectation of her employer. If a maid promises to do something, she should try very hard to fulfill that promise. However, sometimes things change, or circumstances may prevent a maid to do good. But in either of these cases, it’s maid responsibility to discuss the problem with employer and, together, determine the best way forward.
To prevent disappointing employers, a maid must avoid over-promising and under-delivering. It’s important to be respectful and treat employer as she would like them to be treated. Being kind to one another makes the workplace a happy place to live. When your maid is struggling, show them compassion and help them to get through tough times.

Being honest means telling the truth and being straightforward and open with employer. personal integrity always tries to do the right thing, regardless of whether anyone would ever know what they’ve done. They have a strong moral compass. Integrity is a valuable quality in everyone. Maid honesty and integrity will engender trust in employer. Employers to hire a maid, they must look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy.
There are many more attribute that a maid must have, Hardworking, Flexibility, Caring, Trustworthy, Attentive, Loyal. Get in touch with DG- maidagency Malaysia

Employer and maid sometimes have difficulties. They frequently go to Maid Agencies in Malaysia for counselling. No matter the nationality of the helper whether she is from Philippine or Indonesia. Majority of issues fall in the category of 1). Attitude problem 2). Poor performance. Do these problems have relationship to each other, if so, how? It is proven that attitude is a predictor of achievement even more than IQ.
Attitude is defined as “a predisposition or a tendency to respond positively or negatively towards a certain idea, object, person, or situation.” In fact, the way of thinking or feeling about a person or a situation reflect the behaviour. An attitude is a pattern of thought. It affects how people approach everything they do. However attitudes have developed from past experiences; changing behaviour, patterns of thought and outlook will result in a change attitude. Attitude can be changed but it really need strong commitment and if it so changed in positive way, it will be a major factor for the level of success.

Attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mind-set and a growth mind-set. A fixed mind-set person believes nothing can be changed. This creates problems when there is a challenge since anything that appears to be more than it can handle so it bounds to hopeless and overwhelmed. Employers encounter more issue with such a fix mind-set maid during the employment contract. Maid doesn’t want to adjust herself with new environment and change her attitude and behaviour to learn about the new situation. For example, a domestic helper with a fix min-set won’t try to cope with her homesickness issue and very seldom can finish her contract. Bad attitudes are often the outcome of past experiences and practices so it won’t easily change.  As a matter of fact, maids generally don’t have high level of attitude awareness. They usually have less ability on handling their attitude. Their poor attitude creates low self-esteem, stress, fear, offence, anger and an inability to handle changes. Domestic helpers usually don’t fail because of lack of skills. It is usually bad behaviour, bad actions, or bad attitude. There is a strong link between attitude and performance

In contrast; a domestic helper with a growth mind-set believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform than those with a fixed mind-set, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating themselves as opportunities to learn something new. In fact, the best attitude in life is the way of thinking “I can do”. A maid with a positive attitude always has better performance since constantly embraces each challenge as a learning experience. According to new research positive attitude may help more than IQ.
All in all, attitude is everything and has very important impact on performance. All involved recruitment agencies especially source countries as well as employers should find a way to know the attitude of their maids if she is optimistic or pessimistic. However, knowing attitude is timely, complicated and multiplex conditions are involved. Mostly maids show their best behaviour when they are interviewed or during the training period and arrival. In spite of that, by recognizing habits and behaviour, attitude can be predicted so they can find a way to enlighten the maid and help her to improve and adjust in the best way. At last, good attitude must be reciprocal in which employer’s approach can effect on maid attitude so that consequently the performance of the maid will be improved and a successful employment will be expected.

6 Reasons That Makes a Maid Quit Before Finishing Her Contract

It’s pretty common how often you hear employers complaining about their maid leaving before they finish their 2 years contact. It will give them a lot of trouble if their maids choose to end their contract prematurely. Terminating the contracts are so costly in terms of money and time when a maid walking out the door. A simple search by internet brings dozens of websites that have mentioned problem maids in Malaysia and there are a lot of complains by employers. Although most of them are true story, but, do maids really terminate contract without any reason?
Employers tend to blame everyone and everything under the sun, while ignoring the main reasons: maids quit mostly because of some circumstances. The sad thing is that this can be avoided.  Families as an employer may need to consider some potential condition on their part to reduce the possibility of terminating contract by a domestic helper. Besides providing some compulsory things like paying salary, food, shelter, and rest; there are some other potential issues that cause a maid to leave employer’s house. Understanding the situations and preventing them, that employers may do that to make a domestic helper packing their bag, would help them in saving money and time specially for families which they pay service fee a lot to Malaysian Maid Agencies.
1. Overwork
Nothing makes a good maid frustrated to quite like forcing them to overwork. It’s so tempting to compel your maid for extra work that employers frequently fall into this trap. Extra work is confusing; they might feel as if they’re being punished for great performance. Overworking is also inefficient. It is proven that productivity per hour declines sharply when the work exceeds the certain times, and productivity drops off that you don’t get anything out of working more. They probably won’t stay if they must work constantly without rest. Simply increasing their workload because they do not complain, without changing a thing, they will eventually seek a reason to get out of your house.
2. Communicate with maid
Employers need to communicate with their maid to find out what makes them feel good. Communication is an absolute necessary leadership discipline. It doesn’t matter you manage a domestic helper or a professional person. Communication leads to influence on her attitudes in the ways that would help her the most. Maids whose hard work is recognised mostly are more positive and helpful– they are motivated to maintain or even improve their good work in order to gain more recognition and then to reward them for a job well done. It would misinterpret when you tell them “they get for what you do”. It’s easy to underestimate the power of a “pat on the back”, especially with top performers who are intrinsically motivated. Employers should consider a foreign domestic helper comes from another country. Both the employer and the maid have different culture and speak another variety of English. All the cultural and linguistic differences may cause misinterpretation for example pronunciation, intonation, syllabic stresses and rhetoric. Employers should describe about their main culture and life style in advance while understanding the maid’s culture so the maid could reduce misconducting.

3. Care about your maid
Majority of maids who leave their jobs do so because of their relationship with their employers. Humanity and treat them well must be in the centre of all the relationships. It’s impossible to work for someone eight-plus hours a day and live with them 24 hours when employers aren’t personally involved and don’t care about anything other than the job. Employer who fail to really care will always have high rate of termination contract by maids.
4. Honour your commitments
Making promises to a maid places employers on the fine line that lies between making them very happy or watching them walk out the door. When you uphold a commitment, you grow in the eyes of your housemaid because you prove yourself to be trustworthy and honourable. But when you disregard your commitment, you come across your word uncaring, and disrespectful. After all, if the employer doesn’t honour what they promises, must ask themselves why the maid should does.
5. Wrong maid for a wrong situation
We can only be certain about a person’s behaviour and attitude a long time after being with her. Behaviour is a subjective matter, what is sensitive for you others may consider it. However, it is very important to screen potential maids thoroughly and scrutinise them before hiring. Recruitment agencies may do some background research, personality test, and even train them generally, matching a maid with a family to work and live with is not that simple. Every family has their own specific life style, attitude and environment. Employer knows well the entire of the family and the work situation, so they should explain clearly and truly while interviewing a maid to get a good feedback. The job offer should be prepared in details as well. For example, when a maid find herself doing things that are too easy or boring, Vis versa the job is very difficult, they seek for other situation.
6. Pay Attention to maid
When employers are asked about their inattention to a maid, they try to excuse themselves, using words such as “trust,” “autonomy,” and “empowerment.” This is complete nonsense. Good employer always care, no matter how a maid is good. Employer should pay attention and are constantly listening and giving feedback.
When you have a good maid, it’s up to you to keep finding areas in which they can improve to expand their skill set. Everyone at work want feedback—and its employer’s job to keep it coming. If you don’t, your best maid will grow bored and self-satisfied.
Bringing It All Together
If employers want their best maid to stay, they need to think carefully about how to treat them well. While good maids are as tough as nails, their official employment contracts (especially contracts with Philippine Embassy: (POEA) gives them an abundance of options. Employers need to make them “want and willing” to work.
